The World Food Prize Foundation has awarded AGRA, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, the prestigious Norman E. Borlaug Medallion. This recognition honours AGRA's two decades of work in advancing agricultural transformation, strengthening food systems, and improving the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers across Africa.
Mashal Husain, President of the World Food Prize Foundation, stated that Africa’s future must be shaped by African solutions. The award acknowledges AGRA's demonstration of African leadership, innovation, and solutions in agricultural development. This focus addresses critical food security challenges affecting millions of people across the continent.
This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader efforts to achieve food security and boost agricultural productivity. Ghana, like many African nations, relies heavily on smallholder farmers who contribute significantly to its GHS 4.2 billion agricultural sector. Strengthening these farmers through improved seed varieties, sustainable practices, and market access directly supports national economic stability and rural employment.
Mashal Husain presented the award at the DialogueNEXT Africa – Born to Feed the Future event in Nairobi, Kenya. Husain stated, “AGRA exemplifies Africa’s ability to lead its own agricultural transformation.” She highlighted AGRA’s collaboration with governments, researchers, businesses, and development partners.
AGRA’s President, Alice Ruhweza, accepted the award, describing it as a tribute to collective efforts over the past two decades. She emphasized the central role of women farmers in Africa’s food systems. Ruhweza dedicated the recognition to the millions of farmers AGRA serves, especially women whose resilience sustains families and communities.
The Norman E. Borlaug Medallion is given to individuals and institutions that advance the legacy of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug. His vision focused on science-driven, farmer-centered agricultural development. His call to “take it to Africa, take it to the farmer” remains a guiding principle for AGRA.
The award coincides with AGRA’s 20th anniversary, marking a significant milestone. This continued commitment will support smallholder farmers, strengthen national food systems, and expand market opportunities. It will also advance inclusive, market-driven agricultural transformation across the continent.
Decision-makers and agricultural stakeholders will observe AGRA’s continued impact on food production and economic development. The recognition underscores the importance of local solutions and sustained investment in African agriculture. Future initiatives will likely build on AGRA’s model for enhancing food and nutrition security.
