AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has commissioned a GHS 2.86 million Piggery Production Centre in Sanso, Obuasi Municipality. This new facility aims to diversify economic opportunities and create sustainable livelihoods beyond mining in the region.

The investment reflects the company's commitment to community development and includes GHS 1.49 million for construction. An additional GHS 1.37 million covered furnishing, breeding stock, veterinary services, and capacity-building. This project falls under the Mine’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP).

This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader push for agricultural modernization and food security. The government has prioritized agribusiness to strengthen rural economies and reduce reliance on a few key sectors. Such diversification efforts are crucial for long-term economic stability in mining-dependent areas.

Mr. Edmund Oduro Agyei, Director of Sustainability Management at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, stated the project reflects the company’s commitment to creating lasting value. He emphasized that agriculture is a key pillar of the Mine’s community development strategy. Previous agricultural initiatives include the Climate Resilience Oil Palm Plantation Programme (CROPP) and a pilot Piggery and Aquaculture Programme in 2025.

The piggery aims to boost local pig production and enhance food security within the Obuasi Municipality and Obuasi East District. It also seeks to create jobs and strengthen community-based agribusiness. The first phase of the piggery programme saw beneficiary farmers increase their pig population by 171 percent, from 173 to 428 animals.

The new facility features 20 modern pig pens, office and storage facilities, and high-quality breeding stock. It is fully solar-powered, highlighting AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment to climate-smart agricultural development. Local contractor X-Mell Construction executed the project, supporting indigenous businesses.

The Obuasi Municipal Co-operative Pig Farmers and Marketing Society Limited will manage the facility. Its members have received training in modern pig production and cooperative governance. This training ensures the long-term sustainability and success of the enterprise, moving forward.

Madam Faustilove Appiah Kanin, the Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi Municipal Assembly, praised AngloGold Ashanti. She urged beneficiaries to manage the facility responsibly to ensure its long-term impact. This collaboration between corporate and local government entities is vital for regional development.

The success of such projects will be closely watched as Ghana seeks to expand its agricultural output. Diversifying income streams for communities reliant on extractive industries remains a key national economic objective. This investment could serve as a model for other mining companies in Ghana.
