Two men granted GHS 200,000 bail over gold theft

Paul Udeze, 27, and Robert Mensah, 26, received bail totaling GHS 200,000 after being accused of stealing eight ores of gold. The Nkawie Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality granted each man GHS 100,000 bail with two sureties. This decision followed their arrest at a mining site in Esaase, Amansie West District.

These two friends pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and stealing. They are expected to return to court on July 20, 2026. Jonas Alban, a Security Supervisor at Asanko Gold Mining Limited, and his colleagues apprehended the men on June 15, 2026. They were reportedly carrying away eight sacks containing gold-bearing materials from the mining site.

Ghana's gold sector is vital to its economy, contributing significantly to export earnings and government revenue. Incidents of illegal mining, locally known as 'galamsey', pose a serious threat to the industry's integrity and sustainability. These activities often lead to environmental degradation and revenue losses for both mining companies and the state. The legal framework and enforcement mechanisms aim to curb these illicit operations to protect the national assets.

Police Chief Inspector Anthony Ohene Gyan, the prosecutor, informed the court about the details of the arrest. He stated that the accused, identified as illegal miners residing near Esaase, admitted to the offences in their caution statement. The prosecution continues to build its case against Udeze and Mensah.

The case's progression will be closely watched by stakeholders in Ghana's mining sector. A conviction could bolster efforts to deter illegal mining activities. Financial markets and mining companies operating in Ghana pay close attention to such legal actions. Strong enforcement against gold theft is essential for maintaining investor confidence and ensuring responsible resource management.

The continued vigilance of security personnel, as demonstrated by the actions of Jonas Alban and his team, plays a crucial role. This incident underscores the importance of robust security measures at mining sites across the country. The outcome of this trial could set a precedent for similar cases involving theft of mineral resources. It also highlights the persistent challenges in safeguarding Ghana’s rich natural resources.
