MTN Ghana advocates for businesses to adopt sustainability as a fundamental way of life, moving beyond mere regulatory compliance. Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, Acting General Manager for Sustainability and Shared Value at MTN Ghana, stated this position.

Ms. Asare Fiagbenu emphasized that businesses and individuals must operate ethically. They need to use resources responsibly and protect the environment. This responsibility exists regardless of specific regulations. She highlighted that paying taxes is a basic obligation and a key part of responsible behavior.

This push for deeper commitment comes as Ghana and the global business community move towards more structured sustainability practices. Mandatory sustainability reporting is expected to begin in 2027. This framework will allow for standardized measurement and comparison of business performance. The shift reflects a growing understanding that long-term economic stability depends on environmental and social stewardship. Businesses are increasingly expected to contribute positively to society.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Ms. Asare Fiagbenu explained MTN's perspective. She said, “The space is being regulated, but our stance at MTN is that we don't have to comply because we are being regulated. We have to do it as a way of life.” She added that businesses must pursue growth without harming resources needed by society and future generations. This approach ensures that profit generation does not compromise essential societal assets.

The move towards mandatory sustainability reporting in 2027 is encouraging businesses to take the issue more seriously. This regulatory development provides a clear timeline for companies to integrate sustainable practices. However, Ms. Asare Fiagbenu stressed that responsibility cannot rest with only a few companies. She called for all individuals and businesses in Ghana to participate. The broader goal is to encourage responsible choices that support both economic growth and environmental protection. This collective effort is essential for achieving widespread positive impact across the nation.

MTN's Sustainability Month 2026 aims to encourage more people and businesses to adopt these practices. This initiative underscores the company's commitment to fostering a sustainable future. It also seeks to raise awareness about the benefits of ethical operations and resource management. By promoting these values, MTN Ghana hopes to inspire a broader societal shift. This shift will balance business objectives with environmental and social responsibilities. The company believes that true sustainability requires a holistic approach involving every stakeholder.
