Ghana’s Energy Commission has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Global South Utilities (GSU), an investment company based in Abu Dhabi. This agreement aims to boost cooperation and explore new opportunities within Ghana’s energy sector.
The partnership seeks to promote technical cooperation, knowledge sharing, and investment, supporting Ghana's energy transition goals. This initiative will also improve access to sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy for Ghanaians. Expanding energy access aligns with national development priorities.
This collaboration fits into Ghana's broader economic strategy to diversify its energy mix and attract foreign direct investment. Ghana aims to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and increase renewable energy sources. Data from the Energy Commission indicates a growing national demand for electricity, making sustainable energy solutions critical. This MoU follows previous efforts to promote renewable energy, including the launch of renewable energy champion challenges.
Ms. Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie, Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, signed the MoU in Accra. Mr. Ali Al Shimmari, Managing Director and CEO of GSU, also signed the agreement. The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, approved the deal. Ms. Bondzie stated that the agreement provides a platform for both institutions to pursue initiatives. These initiatives will deliver measurable benefits to Ghana’s energy sector. Mr. Al Shimmari reaffirmed GSU’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s energy ambitions.
The partnership will identify practical areas for collaboration, focusing on energy infrastructure development, capacity building, and investments. These efforts will align with Ghana’s clean energy objectives. This strategic move could lead to significant infrastructure projects and job creation. Industry watchers will monitor the implementation of identified projects. Increased investment could also strengthen the Ghana cedi against major foreign currencies. The Energy Commission aims to enhance energy infrastructure resilience and expand access to sustainable energy across the region. This will support Ghana’s long-term economic growth and energy security.
