The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has introduced new advanced security screening equipment at passenger checkpoints in Terminals 2 and 3 of the Accra International Airport. This upgrade aims to boost aviation security and enhance the travel experience for passengers.
The new technology streamlines security checks significantly. Passengers no longer need to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage. They can now keep these items inside their bags during screening. This eliminates a previous manual step, saving time and reducing inconvenience.
This development fits into Ghana's broader push to modernize its infrastructure and services. Improved airport efficiency can positively impact tourism and business travel, both vital for economic growth. Ghana's vision to become a regional aviation hub relies on such technological advancements.
GACL stated that liquids, aerosols, and gels can remain in cabin baggage during screening. However, existing aviation security regulations still apply. Liquids exceeding 100 millilitres per container remain prohibited in cabin baggage.
The upgraded system includes an Automatic Tray Return System. This accelerates the process by quickly returning trays to passengers after checks. Passengers can then repack their belongings more efficiently, further reducing queue times.
The GACL will implement this transition in phases. This ensures uninterrupted airport operations during the rollout. Passengers and other stakeholders should cooperate with airport officials over the coming weeks.
For most travelers, the new system means they will not need to remove shoes and belts during routine screening. This applies unless they are selected for additional checks. This change addresses a common point of frustration for many air travelers. The enhanced efficiency could lead to fewer delays, improving overall airport throughput. This operational improvement could attract more airlines and passengers to Accra. Increased traffic could generate more revenue for the GACL and the Ghanaian economy.
This investment reflects a commitment to global aviation standards. It helps maintain Ghana’s reputation as a safe and efficient travel destination. The move is expected to have a tangible positive impact on passenger satisfaction.
