    The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), in partnership with Humanity First Ghana, has commissioned four new solar-powered boreholes in Wa. This intervention directly addresses severe water scarcity, improves public sanitation, and aims to keep children in school.

    These facilities are located at T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, Chansa, Biihee, and Boli. They are part of a broader seven-borehole Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The project aims to eliminate water distress and protect instructional hours across the Upper West Region. This directly impacts the daily lives of thousands of students and community members.

    This initiative aligns with Ghana's national development priorities to deliver clean, potable water to underserved communities. Access to clean water is a fundamental requirement for health, education, and economic productivity. The Upper West Region, like many northern areas, often faces significant challenges in water provision. Previous data indicates that many rural communities still lack reliable access to safe drinking water. This project helps bridge that gap, contributing to broader public health goals.

    Naval Captain (Rtd) Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, emphasized the importance of water. He stated, "Water is very key to life. Without water, there is no education, no survival, and health problems multiply." He added that placing facilities directly in schools prevents students from leaving premises to search for water. This ensures uninterrupted learning and provides unhindered access for surrounding communities.

    The immediate implications are significant for the beneficiary schools and communities. Students no longer miss classes to fetch water, leading to improved academic performance and attendance. The provision of free water also eases financial burdens on families. This project also reduces the incidence of waterborne diseases like typhoid, which was previously common. The GMA plans to install additional systems in Jirapa and Nandom soon, further expanding the reach of this vital intervention.

    At T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, Headmaster Issahaque Yahaya noted the previous sanitation challenges. The school's 1,433 students relied on a single 12-seater KVIP toilet facility, exacerbated by water scarcity. Senior Prefect Kunkuni Masroor confirmed that typhoid cases were frequent before the new borehole. Girls' Prefect Mac Adams Qaaimah highlighted how daily water struggles caused lateness and missed hygiene routines. Now, students can bathe twice daily and focus on their studies.

    Headteacher Osman Issah of Boli M/A Primary B reported that teachers previously sent pupils to fetch water during class. This practice led to significant loss of contact hours. He confirmed, "Going to town during school hours has completely stopped since this facility was installed." This change directly improves the quality of education delivered.

    In Biihee and Chansa, residents celebrated the end of commercial water charges. Yahaya Niamatu, a Biihee resident, explained that their community depended on one hand pump. This often meant waiting until 5:00 PM for water. Other facilities charged for water, which many families could not afford. The new borehole provides free water for women, children, and farmers, significantly improving their daily lives.

    Maulvi Abu Zul-Haq, Regional Coordinator for Humanity First Ghana, detailed the technical aspects. The systems use solar power with national grid backups. They pump water into elevated storage tanks with detached discharge points. This design prevents structural wear and ensures consistent water supply. He urged local administrators and residents to monitor the infrastructure to prevent theft or damage. Replacing imported photovoltaic panels can take over a month if compromised.

    This project represents a crucial investment in human capital and public health. It demonstrates how targeted infrastructure development can yield substantial social and economic returns. The improved access to water will likely reduce healthcare costs and boost local economic activity. It also sets a precedent for future public-private partnerships in addressing critical development needs across Ghana.
