Mahama Pledges Upper West Academic Hub Investment

President John Mahama has committed to transforming the Upper West Region into a centre for academic excellence in Northern Ghana. This initiative involves sustained investments across education, water infrastructure, renewable energy, and digital connectivity. The President made this pledge during a courtesy call from the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs on July 8.

Government plans to prioritise investments in education infrastructure, teacher development, and digital learning. Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) will also receive significant attention to improve educational outcomes. These steps aim to bolster the region's capacity for higher education.

This commitment aligns with the government's broader strategy to reduce regional disparities and foster inclusive growth across Ghana. Northern Ghana has historically lagged in development indicators, making targeted interventions crucial. Previous data shows ongoing efforts to bridge these gaps through strategic infrastructure and human capital development. For example, the government has launched various initiatives to expand electrification and road networks in northern regions over the past five years.

President Mahama stated, "In education, we're investing in infrastructure, teacher development, digital learning, and technical and vocational education and training." He added that collaboration with the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) and Dr Hilla Limann Technical University will continue. This partnership will position the region as a leading destination for higher education in northern Ghana.

The plans also include improving access to safe water by expanding rural water supply systems. Rehabilitating boreholes and upgrading urban water infrastructure in Wa Municipality and surrounding communities are key components. These measures will directly benefit local households and support economic activities.

Furthermore, President Mahama highlighted the region's potential in renewable energy, particularly solar power. Its favourable climate offers ideal conditions for powering schools, health facilities, and irrigation schemes. This focus on solar energy will reduce operational costs for institutions and support agricultural productivity. The government will also boost rural electrification and digital infrastructure.

This comprehensive investment package is expected to create new employment opportunities and stimulate local businesses. Stakeholders will closely monitor the execution of these projects and their impact on key development indicators. The private sector may also see new avenues for investment in these priority areas. Effective implementation will be crucial for realising the region's full potential.
