The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), in partnership with the Austrian Ministry of Defence, has begun its 9th Political Advisors Course for African Operations. This specialized program, running from June 15 to June 26, 2026, aims to improve political advisory skills within peace support missions across Africa.

The ten-day residential course at KAIPTC in Accra includes participants from approximately 12 countries. These delegates come from West Africa, Central Africa, the Sahel, and East Africa. The initiative prepares political advisors for operations with the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

This course comes at a critical time for Africa's security. West Africa faces increasing instability, challenging national governments and regional groups. Security concerns in the Sahel, like armed conflicts and violent extremism, risk spreading to coastal states. This situation demands better informed political analysis and strategic decisions in peace operations.

Lieutenant Colonel Michael Novotny, Course Director at KAIPTC, highlighted the critical role of political advisors. He stated, “Amidst the complexity of political and security environments across Africa, the role of Political Advisors is pivotal in providing informed analysis, contextual understanding and sound recommendations for effective mission outcomes.” This quote emphasizes the need for skilled advisors in today’s challenging security landscape.

The program equips participants with analytical and advisory skills. They learn to give timely, accurate, and politically informed guidance to mission leaders. This training helps commanders and decision-makers operate in dynamic and often unstable situations. Participants study political analysis, policy advising, negotiation, and public diplomacy.

A key focus is combating disinformation and fake news. The course also addresses the link between security, governance, and local conflicts. Misinformation can affect public opinion and undermine peace operations, making these skills vital. The curriculum is designed to solve practical problems faced by senior leaders in peace missions.

The course uses lectures, case studies, group discussions, and simulation exercises. Experts from Europe, West Africa, and international organizations facilitate training sessions. This diverse group offers participants different insights and practical advice. The program fosters professional exchange and regional networking.

The Political Advisors Course is part of a long-standing partnership between KAIPTC and the Austrian Ministry of Defence. This partnership shows a shared commitment to strengthening Africa's peace and security capabilities. Since its start, the program has trained approximately 178 participants. Many of these individuals have served in regional and international missions across the continent, contributing to peace efforts.

The ongoing instability in the Sahel and its potential to spill over into coastal states necessitates this advanced training. Effective political advisors are crucial for understanding complex environments and guiding responses. The increased capacity of mission leaders will directly impact regional stability and the success of future peace efforts across African nations.
