Madina Traders Appeal for Zoomlion Contract Reinstatement

Traders at Madina Zongo Junction in Accra have formally requested the government to restore Zoomlion Ghana Limited's waste management contract. They argue that the current waste collection arrangements are struggling to address the area's significant sanitation challenges.

The traders state that the lack of regular waste collection services has created serious difficulties. Refuse accumulates quickly in busy markets and densely populated areas. They believe the reinstatement of Zoomlion would improve sanitation, ensure timely waste removal, and support ongoing community cleaning efforts.

This appeal highlights broader concerns regarding urban sanitation infrastructure and waste management efficiency in Ghana. Previous data indicates that inadequate waste disposal contributes to public health risks and environmental degradation across urban centers. The government's reliance on various contractors has sometimes led to inconsistent service delivery.

Speaking to Adom News, one trader emphasized Zoomlion's historical role. She stated, "For the past 17 years that we have been desilting gutters, Zoomlion has been the company responsible for collecting and disposing of the refuse." She added that Zoomlion consistently picked up waste, even when accumulated along roadsides after clean-up efforts. The traders urged the government to provide logistical support, especially vehicles, to ensure waste removed during clean-up exercises does not remain uncollected.

This development will likely prompt a review of current waste management strategies, especially in densely populated market areas. Decision-makers will need to assess the economic and public health implications of inconsistent waste collection services. The effectiveness of future clean-up exercises hinges on reliable waste evacuation. Markets and commercial centers across Accra could face worsening sanitation if these issues are not promptly addressed.
