Ghana's National Democratic Congress (NDC) formalised a political cooperation agreement with United Russia, the governing party of the Russian Federation. This agreement seeks to strengthen party-to-party relations and expand political collaboration across the African continent.
The accord was signed on June 25, 2026, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It took place during a meeting of the Standing Committee of the For the Freedom of Nations! Movement. This international platform connects political parties from diverse countries. NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Andrei Klimov from United Russia’s Supreme Council signed the agreement after bilateral discussions.
This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader foreign policy objectives to diversify partnerships and strengthen international ties. Ghana has historically maintained diplomatic relations with Russia. This agreement builds on those established state-to-state connections. Data indicates Ghana's trade with non-traditional partners like Russia has seen fluctuations but remains a focus for the government seeking development cooperation. The NDC, as a major political force in Ghana, plays a significant role in shaping these international relationships.
A statement issued after the meeting highlighted the growing diplomatic and parliamentary relations between Ghana and Russia. Both parties committed to strengthening cooperation between their political organisations. Mr. Asiedu Nketia acknowledged Russia's historical support for anti-colonial struggles in Africa. He reaffirmed the NDC's commitment to the For the Freedom of Nations! Movement’s ideals. This platform promotes cooperation among political parties on issues affecting national sovereignty and development.
The agreement is expected to facilitate closer exchanges on political organisation, governance, and policy dialogue. It also aims to foster stronger institutional links between the two parties. Both sides agreed to work towards strengthening collaboration among political parties across the African continent. They emphasised enhancing engagement within West Africa. Stronger inter-party relations, they believe, can contribute to broader cooperation between African countries and Russia.
Discussions also covered preparations for the third Russia–Africa Summit. Both parties described this as an important platform for expanding political, economic, and diplomatic engagement. They agreed that sustained dialogue before the summit would reinforce existing partnerships. It would also create additional cooperation opportunities between Russia and African nations. This aligns with Ghana's consistent participation in previous Russia-Africa Summits.
This agreement further consolidates relations between the NDC and United Russia. It complements the broader diplomatic ties between Ghana and Russia. Political observers note this partnership reflects a growing trend of inter-party diplomacy. Governing political parties are increasingly seeking international cooperation. They aim to exchange governance experiences, strengthen institutional capacity, and deepen political engagement. This extends beyond traditional state-to-state relations, signifying an evolving landscape of international political engagement.
