Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) has reported substantial losses after heavy rains submerged its Accra facility, halting operations. The flooding severely affected 23 businesses operating from the technology hub and damaged vital equipment.
Multiple offices experienced water ingress, destroying laptops, furniture, carpets, and other indispensable items. The Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Christine Adwoa Agyapomaa Ansong, stated this incident is the worst disaster the centre has encountered since its inception. Management temporarily advised most staff to remain home due to unsafe conditions at the premises.
This event underscores the growing vulnerability of key Ghanaian infrastructure to severe weather patterns, a significant challenge for the national economy. Accra frequently experiences flooding during its rainy seasons, causing millions of GHS in damage annually and disrupting economic activities across various sectors. The incident at GDCL affects the burgeoning technology and business process outsourcing (BPO) sectors, critical for job creation and economic diversification.
Ms. Ansong highlighted the dual impact of the floods, saying, “As we are speaking, we are not the only people who suffered from this flood. Our tenants who also bring us money have suffered.” She also mentioned that some laptops were completely submerged. GDCL relies significantly on internally generated funds from renting spaces to technology companies and BPO firms. The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has visited the facility to assess the situation.
GDCL is developing an incident report to fully evaluate the damage before submission to the government. This report will inform potential recovery efforts and resource allocation. Ms. Ansong has requested support from the government, corporate entities, and other stakeholders to facilitate the centre’s restoration and aid affected businesses. The incident could prompt discussions on resilient infrastructure development to safeguard digital economy assets against climate change impacts.
