Ghana's government will upgrade all Rural Telephony Project sites across the country to at least 4G technology. Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George confirmed this development.
The upgrade is necessary because 2G and 3G technologies are increasingly insufficient for modern digital demands. Global telecommunications systems are advancing rapidly towards 5G and 6G. This initiative will ensure rural areas are not left behind in the digital transformation.
This upgrade fits into Ghana's broader economic strategy to leverage technology for development. Improved connectivity in rural areas can boost local economies, facilitate e-commerce, and enhance access to education and healthcare services. The government views telecommunications infrastructure as a critical component of national development, alongside investments in roads, schools, and hospitals.
Minister Samuel Nartey George stated, "The world has moved to 5G, getting to 6G, so at the very least we must give 4G to our networks." He made these remarks after inspecting various Rural Telephony Project sites in the Eastern Region. These sites included facilities at Dumpong, Nkumkrom, Nsakye, and Obosono.
The upgrade forms part of a larger review of the Rural Telephony Project, which will be presented to Cabinet. This review will outline the comprehensive strategy for modernizing Ghana's rural digital infrastructure. The government has already allocated GHS 30 million to rural telephony projects under the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) budget this year. Work is also underway to expand network infrastructure and improve connectivity in peri-urban and underserved communities. This investment signals a strong commitment to digital inclusion and economic growth across all regions of Ghana.
