The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche S.p.A., an Italian engineering firm. This agreement secures a proposed €300 million investment for Ghana's downstream aluminium infrastructure. The partnership aims to accelerate Ghana’s industrialization by adding more value to its bauxite resources.
This significant investment will fund an aluminium foil rolling plant and a Centre of Excellence. The plant will be in an integrated industrial park within the Tema Heavy Industrial Zone. It will produce 40,000 to 45,000 tonnes of aluminium foil annually. The Centre of Excellence will offer training and promote technology development in advanced aluminium processing.
This initiative fits into Ghana’s broader economic plan to diversify its export base and create more jobs. Ghana aims to move from exporting raw bauxite to manufacturing high-value aluminium products. This strategy aligns with the government's industrialization agenda. Data indicates a persistent reliance on raw material exports, which this project seeks to reduce.
Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, the Chief Executive Officer of GIADEC, stated the partnership promotes a fully integrated aluminium value chain. He said, “GIADEC will continue to work with credible global partners to position Ghana as an emerging hub for advanced aluminium manufacturing in West Africa.” Danilo Dreolini of the Danieli Group added the project is a critical opportunity. It will transform natural resources into high-value industrial products, supporting Ghana’s industrial development agenda.
This investment is expected to stimulate economic growth and create numerous direct and indirect jobs. It will also foster the development of related industrial clusters in the Tema area. This project could strengthen Ghana's manufacturing base. It may also improve the country's competitiveness in exporting processed aluminium products. Decision-makers and markets will closely monitor the project's progress and its impact on Ghana's industrial landscape. The proposed aluminium plant will be located within an industrial park developed by ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms, GIADEC, and the Tema Development Corporation. This location ensures proximity to key infrastructure like the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) and Tema Port. These facilities are crucial for efficient, export-oriented production. The project’s success could attract further foreign direct investment into Ghana's manufacturing sector.
