The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has identified fish farm wastewater as a valuable resource for vegetable production. This innovative approach can significantly address Ghana's food security challenges. The technology, known as the Integrated Agriculture-Aquaculture System (IAAS), uses nutrient-rich wastewater from fish production to grow crops. This method allows farmers to produce both fish and vegetables while reducing waste and environmental pollution.
This initiative was highlighted at the 2026 Mid-Year Review of the CSIR Water Research Institute (WRI) in Accra. The review focused on the theme: 'Water, Environment, Food, Health Nexus: Building Resilience for the Future.' Dr. Seth Agyakwah, Head of Aquaculture at the WRI, spoke at the event. He noted that wastewater from fish ponds, concrete tanks, reservoirs, and tarpaulin tanks is often discharged into the environment. This discharge occurs despite the water containing vital nutrients that can support crop production.
Ghana faces increasing pressure on its water and natural resources. The country also grapples with persistent food security concerns. Adopting innovative agricultural practices like IAAS is crucial for sustainable development. This system aligns with Ghana's broader economic goals of self-sufficiency and environmental protection. It offers a practical solution to enhance agricultural output without increasing resource strain. Previous efforts to boost food production often overlooked the potential of waste streams.
Dr. Agyakwah emphasised the value of this resource. He stated, “Don’t waste it. It is not waste because there are nutrients locked up in it, and that can be utilised for crop production.” Researchers first assess the nutrient content of the wastewater. They then match it with the specific requirements of various crops. This careful matching ensures optimal growth and nutrient uptake. Trials conducted by researchers have already produced good yields. These results demonstrate the system's potential to increase food production significantly. It also reduces the environmental impact associated with discharging aquaculture wastewater.
The IAAS approach is based on the principles of a circular economy. In this model, waste from one production activity becomes an input for another. Dr. Agyakwah explained, “This is about encouraging a bio-circular economy, where the wastewater from one resource can be used to produce useful inputs for another food production system.” This concept is particularly relevant as Ghana seeks to strengthen food security. It also helps manage the increasing pressure on water and other natural resources. The system offers a sustainable pathway for agricultural expansion.
However, Dr. Agyakwah expressed concern about the current use of untreated wastewater for vegetable production. He warned that some farmers cultivate vegetables with water from gutters and other potentially contaminated sources. Such water can contain heavy metals and other harmful substances. These contaminants can be absorbed by crops and eventually enter the human food chain. He stressed the urgent need for safer approaches to water reuse in agriculture. This ensures public health and food safety.
Dr. Sylvester Afram Boadi, a Research Scientist at CSIR-WRI, also presented a paper. His presentation, titled “Water-Energy-Food-Environment Stakeholder-Led Assembly and Planning for Ghana,” highlighted the need for coordinated planning. He called for collaboration among government institutions, researchers, local authorities, and communities. This integrated approach is essential to address the interconnected challenges in Ghana’s water, energy, food, and environmental sectors. It underscores the importance of efficient resource use.
The successful implementation of IAAS could lead to significant economic benefits for Ghana. It could reduce reliance on imported vegetables and create new income streams for farmers. Policymakers will likely consider integrating this technology into national agricultural strategies. This would support the 'Planting for Food and Jobs' initiative. Investors and agricultural stakeholders will closely watch the scaling up of these pilot projects. The system promises a more resilient and sustainable food future for Ghana.
