The Ghanaian government is planning to process excess eggs into powdered and other value-added forms. This aims to address repeated gluts in the poultry industry. It will also help reduce financial losses for farmers.

This new approach is expected to be a key part of the National Poultry Master Plan. The plan seeks to make market prices more stable. It also aims to make products last longer. Reducing waste after harvest is another goal. The plan also wants to create new chances within the whole poultry business.

Kwesi Etu-Bonde, Chief Technical Advisor to the Minister of Food and Agriculture, spoke about these plans. He told reporters that the government is focusing on adding more value. It will also improve storage systems. This will help manage the large amounts of eggs produced. Value addition for eggs might include turning them into powder, he said.

Poultry farmers have long complained about too many eggs. This leads to very low selling prices. This often causes them to lose a lot of money. Mr. Etu-Bonde explained that government help for growing maize and soya has lowered feed costs. This has encouraged more people to start poultry farms. This led to the current egg surplus, he noted.

The government is also using the School Feeding Programme. This programme will help buy some of the extra eggs. President Nana Akufo-Addo has ordered the programme to buy eggs from the market. This is to support poultry farmers. The proposed poultry master plan will introduce long-term solutions. These will strengthen the entire poultry system. It will also increase processing ability. Reducing the impact of too much production is a main goal.

This move signals a shift towards more strategic agricultural planning. Ghana has faced challenges with food security and agricultural trade balances. Investments in processing and value addition are crucial for economic growth. They can also help reduce reliance on imports. The success of this plan could offer a model for other agricultural sectors facing similar issues.

Stakeholders will be watching closely. The implementation details and funding for processing facilities will be important. The market response to powdered eggs is also key. This could open up new export markets. It could also create jobs in processing and logistics sectors. The plan’s impact on overall food prices will also be a focus for consumers.
