Humane Futures Advocates for Animal Welfare Legislation in Parliament

Student-led group submits policy brief to parliamentary committees, pushing for modernised laws and sustainable food systems.

Humane Futures, a student-led organisation, has formally submitted a policy brief to Ghana’s Parliament, advocating for new animal welfare legislation. This submission, made on July 23, 2026, targets the select committees on Climate, Food and Agriculture, Environment, and Health. The group seeks to modernise Ghana's animal welfare laws and integrate humane, plant-forward food systems into national agricultural policy. The initiative aims to strengthen Ghana's food security, attract innovation, and promote sustainable economic growth. The policy brief specifically highlights the need to support the implementation of Ghana's newly developed National Poultry Welfare Standard (GS 1404:2026). This standard provides clear guidelines for the humane treatment of poultry, a critical component of the nation's food supply. This advocacy aligns with Ghana's broader economic strategy to diversify its agricultural sector and enhance food production efficiency. The government has consistently emphasised the importance of sustainable practices to ensure long-term economic stability and public health. Integrating animal welfare into agricultural policy can lead to more resilient food systems, reducing reliance on traditional, often less sustainable, methods. Audrey Atampoka Ayambire, Co-founder of Humane Futures, stated that their objective is to build constructive relationships with policymakers. She noted this will initiate conversations on how Ghana can strengthen its food system while improving outcomes for public health, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare. This approach underscores the importance of collaboration between civil society and legislative bodies. The submission occurred during the first-ever Ghana Parliamentary Lobby Day, which focused on advancing the country's food system and animal welfare standards. This event allowed Humane Futures, along with volunteer students, veterinarians, and researchers, to engage directly with Members of Parliament (MPs). The MPs encouraged the group to maintain communication and present a formal petition to the Speaker of Parliament for broader institutional discussions. Maxwell Asampana, also a Co-founder, emphasised this initial engagement as an important milestone. He highlighted its role in establishing dialogue with Parliament and working collaboratively with policymakers. The organisation is now meeting individual parliamentarians, government agencies, researchers, financial institutions, civil society organisations, and industry stakeholders. This extensive outreach aims to develop evidence-based policy recommendations for Ghana's food system. The push for modernised animal welfare legislation reflects a growing global trend towards ethical and sustainable agricultural practices. Ghana's adoption of such policies could enhance its international standing and potentially open new markets for its agricultural products. Improved animal welfare standards can also lead to better public health outcomes by reducing disease transmission and improving food quality. Furthermore, the integration of plant-forward food systems into national policy could stimulate innovation within the agricultural technology sector. This could attract investments and create new job opportunities in areas like plant-based protein production and sustainable farming. The long-term economic benefits of these changes are substantial, contributing to a more robust and resilient national economy. The collaboration with various stakeholders, including Animal Welfare League (AWL), SHARED Africa, AWASH (Aquatic Welfare for African Sustainability and Health), and the Root Alliance, demonstrates a unified effort. These organisations are collectively advancing humane and sustainable food systems in Ghana. Their combined efforts are crucial for driving meaningful policy change and ensuring its effective implementation across the country.
