Cocoa farmers in Ghana's Oti Region are calling for immediate government and Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) intervention. They need a dedicated cocoa clinic and vital support services. This appeal was made at the first operational meeting of the Ahondwo Cocoa Operational Area. The farmers highlighted critical unmet needs impacting their work. They are calling for better welfare and sustained cocoa production.

Farmers in Ahondwo face significant challenges. These include very limited access to quality healthcare. They also struggle with inadequate agrochemical supplies. There is a lack of scholarship opportunities for their children. Insufficient logistics support is another major concern. Chairman John Paul Anewaba stated that clinics are in big cities. He questioned why farmers in remote areas lack basic care. "It is of no use for the government to establish a cocoa clinic in Accra while the growers of cocoa continue to suffer," he said.

This situation is part of a larger economic picture for Ghana. Cocoa is a key export crop. It brings significant foreign exchange earnings. The Oti Region is a vital cocoa-producing area. It continues to produce quality cocoa. This is happening while illegal mining, widespread as 'galamsey', harms production in other areas. The farmers' request highlights the need for targeted investment. It also shows the importance of supporting agricultural communities. These areas are critical to the national economy.

Nana Nkpedzi, Chief of Dufrunkpa, stressed the need for government investment. He urged recognition of the Oti Region's contribution to the national economy. He called for targeted investments and improved support systems. The farmers also reported poor communication networks. Weak mobile connectivity hinders contact with extension officers. It affects their ability to get emergency services. It also limits access to important farming information. They asked for improved network coverage.

Improved healthcare and support services are essential. These will boost farmer motivation. They will also safeguard Ghana's important cocoa industry. The farmers hope for a positive response from COCOBOD and authorities. Expanded access to farm inputs and financial assistance is also crucial. These measures will boost productivity and sustainability. They are key to the future of cocoa farming in the region.
