The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is actively pursuing the integration of payment systems across Africa. This initiative aims to support businesses and enhance cross-border trade within the sub-region. Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, confirmed these efforts at the 2026 ACI World Congress.

Dr. Asiama stressed that interoperability in payment systems is crucial for Africa’s financial agenda and future economic growth. Many transactions between African countries remain expensive and inefficient. He noted it is often cheaper to send money across oceans than between neighboring African nations.

This push for integrated payment systems aligns with Ghana’s broader economic strategy to foster regional trade and development. Efficient payment solutions are vital for the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The BoG's focus on digital innovation reflects a wider trend in Ghana and across Africa towards modern financial infrastructure. Previous financial integration efforts have seen progress, but payment systems have lagged behind.

“What is lagging behind is the payments and settlements aspect,” Dr. Asiama stated. He also mentioned, “Someone says it is cheaper for example to send money across the oceans than it is to send money to another country within the sub-region.” This statement highlights the urgent need for reform. He reiterated that central banks are supporting various innovations, including the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS).

The integration of African payment systems promises to significantly reduce transaction costs and processing times for businesses. This will facilitate smoother trade flows and boost economic activity across the continent. Decision-makers and market participants will watch for concrete steps and timelines for these digital payment solutions. The success of these initiatives will enhance Ghana's role in regional financial leadership.

Furthermore, the Bank of Ghana is collaborating with the AfCFTA Secretariat to explore digital innovations like stablecoins. These digital currencies could address cross-border payment issues. Dr. Asiama revealed that the BoG conducted a sandbox environment to test these platforms. This testing aims to establish robust systems for greater sub-regional integration.

The move towards integrated payment systems will also benefit individuals. It will make remittances and personal transfers faster and more affordable. This initiative underscores Ghana's commitment to leveraging technology for financial inclusion and economic empowerment. The BoG's proactive approach signals a significant shift in Africa's financial landscape.
