Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has urged African leaders to take a leading role in shaping global finance. He stressed the need for Africa to move beyond simply participating in the global financial system.

Speaking at the 3i Africa Summit in Accra, Dr. Asiama indicated that Africa has reached a critical point. He argued that strategic actions and coordination will define its position in the changing global financial landscape. Africa has made significant strides in financial inclusion. Approximately 49% of adults in Sub-Saharan Africa now have access to digital financial accounts.

This call for leadership comes as Ghana navigates complex economic challenges. These include managing inflation and stabilizing its currency, the Ghana Cedi. The BoG's ongoing efforts to enhance digital financial services align with its broader mandate. The mandate is to promote financial stability and economic growth within the nation. The Governor's message reflects a growing regional ambition. This ambition seeks to elevate Africa's influence in global economic discourse.

Dr. Asiama asked, "The question before us is straightforward: will Africa simply adopt the next phase of finance, or will Africa help to shape it?" He highlighted the widespread adoption of digital financial services. This includes mobile money and branchless banking. These innovations have built a strong foundation for future transformation. He cautioned that the focus must shift from merely providing access to achieving real economic impact. "Access must translate into scale and access must translate into value," he asserted.

The next phase of digital finance in Africa depends on system integration. It also relies on policy harmonization and building trust across borders. This transformation requires strong partnerships, sustained investment, and consistent policy alignment. The Governor stated that Africa's digital financial ecosystem must mature. This maturity must be guided by discipline, transparency, and competitiveness. "Our goal must be to ensure that these pillars are not only articulated, but effectively applied through strong partnerships and sustained investment," he added.

This push for leadership aims to position Africa as a key player. It seeks to ensure the continent shapes the rules and structures of future global finance. Policymakers and industry leaders must work together. They must turn current financial access into tangible economic benefits. This requires coordinated efforts across the continent. It also demands clear regulatory frameworks. These actions will help Africa unlock its full economic potential. They will strengthen its voice in international financial discussions.
