Oppong Nkrumah Calls for Halt to Policies Causing Bank of Ghana Losses

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a key figure on Parliament's Economy and Development Committee, has demanded that the government immediately stop certain economic policies. These actions are increasing financial strain on the Bank of Ghana (BoG). The central bank's reported operating loss for 2025 was GH¢15.6 billion. This is a significant rise from the GH¢9.4 billion loss recorded in 2024.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah stated that the focus should shift from understanding the problems at the Bank of Ghana to halting policy decisions that worsen its financial health. He specifically pointed to the design of the gold purchase program. He believes the program's structure, not its goals, is the cause of the reported losses. Changes in how these losses are accounted for do not fix the underlying financial issues, he added. Concerns were also raised about liquidity sterilization operations, used to control inflation. These operations have grown substantially.

The trend of liquidity sterilization is a significant concern in Ghana's economic management. These operations involve the central bank removing money from circulation. This is typically done to dampen inflationary pressures. In 2025, about US$19 billion was used in sterilization activities. This is a notable increase from the approximately US$93 billion used in 2024. Such reliance on these measures could increase government debt if not addressed. This situation puts further pressure on public finances.

Speaking on Joy News' The Pulse, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah stressed that policy solutions must offer concrete alternatives, not just identify issues. He believes opposition proposals deserve serious consideration. The Bank of Ghana's financial statements for 2025 show this growing problem. Its negative equity, a measure of financial health, worsened significantly. Negative equity rose from GH¢58.62 billion in 2024 to GH¢93.82 billion in 2025. This indicates a deteriorating financial position for the central bank.

These developments raise questions about the sustainability of the current economic policies. The government faces increasing pressure to explain its fiscal and monetary strategy. Investors and citizens will closely watch for any policy adjustments. The ongoing losses at the Bank of Ghana could impact its ability to manage the economy effectively. This situation demands urgent attention from policymakers to ensure financial stability moving forward.
