The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, stated that leaders without ethics cannot build lasting institutions. He warned that integrity and fairness are the fundamental building blocks for sustainable organizations and effective governance. His message was delivered at the Ghana Business Leaders Conclave held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Friday, May 15.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized that negotiations, mediations, and leadership must be guided by honesty and moral discipline. He cautioned that manipulation and self-interest lead to temporary successes at best. A negotiator without integrity manipulates, he said. A mediator without fairness destroys trust. A leader without ethics may achieve temporary success but will never build a lasting institution.

The Asantehene drew parallels with the Ashanti Kingdom's history. He reflected on how moral values helped stabilize the kingdom after his ascension to the Golden Stool. Traditional leadership rooted in spirituality, truth, and fairness resolved disputes that once threatened unity. These lessons later informed the resolution of wider national conflicts, reinforcing his conviction. He highlighted that sincerity and justice are key to resolving any dispute.

He argued that conflict resolution requires more than just strategy or authority. Successful mediation depends on reason, patience, perseverance, and respect for truth and honour. Every conflict has a solution and can be resolved by people if they apply these principles. These attributes are as essential in business as they are in traditional governance.

The Asantehene stressed that the same principles are vital within modern corporate leadership. Disputes over labour relations, contracts, and shareholder interests can destabilize organizations if not handled ethically. These attributes are needed from the shop floor to the boardroom. They apply to shareholder disputes, labour relations, contract negotiations, and national development planning.

He warned that many institutions fail not due to a lack of expertise or financial resources. Failure often stems from leadership losing its moral compass. Integrity remains indispensable in every sphere of leadership and relationship management. Whether resolving conflicts or inspiring harmony, integrity is crucial.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II challenged conventional views on leadership training and corporate governance. He argued that negotiation and mediation are not merely technical skills. He stated clearly that they are moral disciplines. This perspective underscores the importance of ethical grounding in all leadership roles.
