Enterprise Group PLC has inaugurated a GHS 2.4 million maternal and child health facility at the Sunyani Municipal Hospital. This new Reproductive and Child Health and Family Planning Unit aims to strengthen healthcare delivery in the Bono Region. The investment replaces a dilapidated maternity block, providing modern amenities for patient care.
The unit includes staff offices, standard washrooms, a waiting area, a child bathing space, and a cold room for vaccine storage. The facility is fully furnished with necessary medical equipment. Its purpose is to enhance maternal and child health services, boost family planning performance, and support immunization, nutrition, and child health promotion. This project directly addresses the persistent challenges faced by mothers in accessing quality maternity services.
Ghana has made progress in maternal and child health, but significant access issues remain across the country. Overcrowding, inadequate equipment, and aging infrastructure continue to hinder effective healthcare delivery. Data from the Ghana Health Service often highlights discrepancies in facility availability between urban and rural areas. This new facility in Sunyani contributes to closing that gap, particularly in a region experiencing increasing demand for health services.
Mike Tyson, the Chief Finance Officer of Enterprise Group PLC, highlighted the company's dedication to improving health outcomes. He stated, “Many mothers still face difficult conditions in accessing maternity services due to overcrowding, inadequate equipment and ageing infrastructure.” Mr. Tyson urged hospital authorities to ensure the facility’s proper maintenance for long-term impact. The Managing Director of Enterprise Properties, Kwadwo Nini Owusu, confirmed the project's adherence to Ghana Health Service standards.
This investment is expected to significantly improve access to essential health services for mothers, infants, and young children. Hospitals like Sunyani Municipal, established almost a century ago, have seen limited infrastructure expansion despite growing demand. The new unit will enhance service delivery, reduce overstretched resources, and offer a more dignified birthing experience. This development could encourage other private sector entities to invest in social infrastructure projects, further supporting Ghana's health objectives.
