Mary Anane Awuku, Chief Executive Officer of Facility Pro Management Services, left a stable banking career at Zenith Bank to start a cleaning business. This career shift, which she describes as difficult and defining, has led to the growth of a company now valued beyond GHS 10 million. Awuku shared her entrepreneurial journey on The Career Trail programme on Joy Learning TV and Joy News.
After graduating from the University of Ghana with a degree in Psychology, Philosophy, and Spanish, Awuku began her National Service at Zenith Bank. She was retained as a full-time staff member in the customer service unit, working across various branches including Head Office, Industrial Area, and East Legon. Within two years after her National Service, Awuku realized her entrepreneurial calling. Her posting to the Kantamanto branch, with its vibrant trading environment, strongly reinforced this realization, prompting her resignation.
Awuku's decision to leave banking for cleaning was met with widespread questioning. Colleagues at Zenith Bank viewed it as a foolish choice, considering the security it offered. Her family, particularly concerned as she was the last born, also struggled to support her decision. They highlighted the financial advantages and loan access the banking job provided, especially since her older siblings were not in stable employment. Despite this strong opposition, Awuku pursued her conviction, transitioning from a banking suit to work overalls.
Her passion for cleaning and neat environments fueled her move into this new sector. Awuku stated her lifelong interest in hygiene and organization. She recalled enjoying cleaning chores and interior décor at home, always seeking tidy spaces. She began her cleaning business with just one employee. The early days were challenging, involving constant pitching for contracts. At one point, her initial colleague left due to the slow progress in securing clients. However, Awuku persisted, gradually building the business.
Thirteen years on, Awuku's persistence has yielded significant success. Facility Pro Management Services has expanded beyond basic cleaning to become a comprehensive facility management company. The company now offers a wide range of services including landscaping, fumigation, and security systems management. These services aim to maintain properties for clients. Awuku expressed happiness that her business has grown substantially and is now respected for its achievements. The success of Facility Pro Management Services demonstrates a significant shift in the Ghanaian service sector, where specialized management solutions are increasingly in demand. This growth contrasts with the traditional focus on sectors like mining and agriculture.
