Ghanaian entrepreneur Mary Anane Awuku urged young people to actively seek leadership roles. She stressed that even small responsibilities in school can build confidence and lead to long-term success.
Awuku shared her own journey during an appearance on Joy Learning TV's 'The Career Trail' program. She began as a student leader in junior high school, serving as head of grounds. Her leadership experience grew at St. Mary's Senior High School, where she became SRC Secretary. She then expanded her influence to zonal and regional student leadership structures in Greater Accra.
This guidance comes at a time when Ghana is focused on youth empowerment and skill development. The nation's economy relies on a dynamic and engaged young population. Previous government initiatives have aimed to support entrepreneurship and job creation for the youth. Awuku's message aligns with efforts to foster a generation ready to take on challenges and drive progress.
"Don’t hide in your shell because the world, nobody’s an island," Awuku stated. "I encourage anybody in school where you are, try to do something, even if it’s a small group. Be part of some form of group where you make a positive impact to the people that you serve." She believes these early experiences are vital.
Awuku's advice has implications for educational institutions and youth organizations. Encouraging participation in student government and club leadership can better prepare students for the professional world. The development of soft skills like communication and problem-solving, honed through these roles, is essential for Ghana's economic growth. Future leaders need to be confident and prepared to make an impact.
She also spoke about her experience running for regional SRC Secretary, a contest she did not win. However, she noted this loss further strengthened her resolve and confidence. In university, she served as a hall president. She also participated in various committees, always seeking to make a tangible impact. These cumulative experiences helped her develop the ability to speak boldly and engage with others without intimidation.
Awuku is a known figure in Ghana's business community, having previously shared insights on career shifts, including her transition from banking to cleaning services. Her focus on practical experience and personal development offers a valuable perspective for students aiming to excel. Her advice is particularly relevant as many young Ghanaians seek pathways to successful careers and leadership positions.
