MTN Ghana has announced an ambitious target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. This commitment means the company will balance the amount of greenhouse gases released with an equivalent amount removed or offset.

This significant undertaking will require major operational changes. MTN Ghana plans to power its network infrastructure with cleaner energy sources. It will also transition its vehicle fleet from petrol and diesel to electric vehicles (EVs). The company will further improve energy efficiency across its operations and strengthen its management of electronic waste.

This initiative fits into Ghana's broader economic and environmental strategy. It aligns with global efforts under the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit global warming. MTN Ghana's move positions the company to reduce its environmental footprint and build long-term operational resilience. Such corporate sustainability efforts are becoming increasingly vital for attracting investment and maintaining social license to operate in Ghana.

Angela Mensah Poku, Chief Enterprise Business Officer at MTN Ghana, affirmed the company's dedication. She stated, "We remain committed to a more sustainable future with ambition net-zero by 2040." This statement was made during a media and stakeholder engagement in Kumasi on July 30, 2026. She emphasized that sustainability is deeply integrated into the company's operations and value creation.

The company's commitment has significant implications for its future operations and the broader telecommunications sector. It signals a shift towards more environmentally conscious business practices in Ghana. Other companies may follow suit, driven by regulatory pressures or consumer demand for greener services. This transition could also spur growth in Ghana's renewable energy and EV infrastructure sectors.

MTN Ghana is also making substantial financial investments to support its growth and sustainability goals. The company plans to invest GHS 4.2 billion (equivalent to $1.1 billion) over the next three years. A significant portion of this, GHS 1.45 billion (equivalent to $380 million), is allocated for investments this year alone. These funds will expand its network and strengthen the resilience of its systems, ensuring continued connectivity for its customers.

Beyond environmental commitments, MTN Ghana continues to prioritize investments in resilient digital infrastructure. This supports Ghana's growing demand for connectivity. The company leverages technology to improve access to healthcare, education, and financial services. These efforts contribute to a more digitally connected, inclusive, and resilient Ghanaian economy.

MTN Ghana is a major contributor to Ghana's public finances. It is one of the country's largest corporate taxpayers. The company contributes approximately 6% of Ghana's total tax revenue. This financial contribution, combined with its infrastructure investments and sustainability initiatives, highlights its significant role in the national economy.

The company will launch its Sustainability Month in August 2026. This event will mark 30 years of MTN's operations in Ghana. It will bring together employees, suppliers, customers, and communities to drive positive social and environmental impact. This initiative underscores the company's holistic approach to sustainability, extending beyond just emissions reduction.
