The first volunteer in the world has received an experimental vaccine against the Ebola virus. Ed Hunt, a 37-year-old UK man, received the initial dose in Oxford, where scientists developed the vaccine in just eight weeks. Hunt is the first of 50 healthy volunteers, aged 18-55, participating in this phase one clinical trial. The current licensed vaccine is effective against the Zaire species of Ebola but offers no protection against the Bundibugyo strain, which is responsible for the ongoing outbreak.
Professor Teresa Lambe, who led the Ebola vaccine team at the University of Oxford, explained the rapid development. She stated that decades of prior research provided the necessary foundation. Professor Lambe emphasized that the trial's primary goal is to confirm the vaccine's safety and observe a robust immune response. This response could potentially offer protection against the Bundibugyo species of Ebola.
The initiation of human trials for this new vaccine offers a glimmer of hope for affected regions. There are currently four vaccines in development specifically targeting the Bundibugyo species. However, the Oxford vaccine is the first to advance to human trials. The Serum Institute in India has already manufactured 600,000 doses of this Oxford Ebola vaccine.
