Scientists from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have issued a critical warning regarding the widespread pollution of Ghana's water bodies. Approximately 60% of the nation's water resources are now reported to be polluted, posing significant threats to public health, food production, and local livelihoods.
This alarming situation is primarily driven by illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, which introduces harmful contaminants into rivers and streams. Agricultural runoff, industrial discharges, and household waste also contribute substantially to the degradation of these vital natural resources. The CSIR-Water Research Institute (WRI) highlighted these findings during its Mid-Year Review 2026 in Accra.
The extensive pollution of Ghana's water bodies represents a severe challenge to the nation's economic stability and public welfare. Water is fundamental for agriculture, industry, and daily life, making its degradation a direct threat to economic growth and human development. This issue exacerbates existing pressures on Ghana's healthcare system and food security, potentially leading to increased expenditure on water treatment and healthcare services.
Dr. Franklin Obiri-Nyarko, a Research Scientist at the WRI’s Groundwater and Geoscience Division, presented a paper titled “Can Ghana Heal Her Waters? Towards Sustainable Remediation of Polluted Water Bodies.” He stated that contaminants like mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, cyanide, and manganese have been detected in polluted water bodies. Prolonged exposure to these substances can cause neurological damage, kidney and respiratory problems, developmental disorders, and various cancers, particularly among vulnerable populations.
The implications of this widespread water pollution are far-reaching. Contaminated water used for irrigation can transfer harmful substances into crops, directly impacting food security and human health. The CSIR emphasizes that simply treating polluted water is insufficient; addressing the sources of pollution is crucial for sustainable restoration. Decision-makers must consider stricter enforcement of environmental laws and invest in alternative livelihoods for those involved in illegal mining. Markets may also react to potential disruptions in agricultural output and increased costs for clean water provision.
Dr. Obiri-Nyarko proposed a five-pronged approach to tackle the crisis effectively. This strategy includes reducing pollution at its origin, preventing the spread of contaminants, treating polluted water with complementary technologies, restoring affected ecosystems, and implementing continuous monitoring with adaptive management. He cautioned against relying on a single remediation technology, noting that one intervention might inadvertently introduce new environmental risks.
Mrs. Zita Abuntori, a Research Scientist at the WRI’s Tamale Station, presented findings from a study on the Volta River system. Her research confirmed mining-related impacts on tributaries feeding into the White Volta and Black Volta systems. Runoff from mining areas flows into these main river systems, with activities in neighboring countries like Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire also affecting Ghana’s water resources. While pH levels were generally acceptable, high turbidity and significant heavy-metal concentrations were found in mining-affected tributaries.
Dr. Prosper Bazaanah, who focused on the socio-economic aspects of the Volta River study, highlighted communities' heavy reliance on rivers, streams, and groundwater for farming, fishing, and domestic use. Residents consistently identified illegal mining as the primary source of water pollution. This degradation forces communities to depend more on groundwater, while traditional livelihoods are being replaced by mining activities. Residents have reported health issues such as skin rashes, diarrhea, and respiratory complaints, along with noticeable changes in water color and odor. Abandoned mining pits also pose risks to children and animals, and the influx of foreign miners adds to social and environmental pressures. Communities expressed concern over their limited involvement in decisions regarding mining concessions and licenses. Stronger transboundary cooperation and sustained enforcement of anti-illegal mining measures are essential for protecting Ghana's water future.
