The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will complete a significant network upgrade in Kumasi by June 5, 2026. This project aims to enhance power supply reliability and voltage quality across the Ashanti Region.

The upgrade focuses on key sub-transmission lines connecting the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Primary Substation to the Kaase Primary Substation, and from Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply Point. Engineers are replacing existing 265-square-millimetre conductors with larger 400-square-millimetre conductors and weak cables. This technical improvement will strengthen the electricity network for communities such as Kaase, Kuntenase, Sewua, and Bekwai.

This infrastructure investment aligns with Ghana's broader efforts to modernize its energy sector and meet increasing power demands. Reliable electricity is crucial for economic development, supporting businesses and reducing operational costs for industries. Frequent power outages, known locally as 'dumsor', have historically impacted productivity and consumer confidence across the country. Investing in grid resilience is vital for Ghana's industrialization agenda.

Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager of External Communications at ECG, confirmed the completion timeline. He stated the upgrade improves power supply and strengthens the sub-transmission link between the Kumasi 1 and Kumasi 2 Bulk Supply Points. Dr. Ayiku also acknowledged the temporary inconveniences caused by the ongoing works. He assured the public that these challenges are necessary for a more reliable long-term electricity supply for the region.

The completion of this project is expected to significantly reduce power outages in the Greater Kumasi area. Improved voltage stability will benefit residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Decision-makers and markets will closely monitor the impact on business operations and overall economic activity in the region. The reliable power supply could attract more investments to Ashanti Region, a key economic hub.
