The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) plans to finish a significant upgrade of its power network in Greater Kumasi by June 5, 2026. This project focuses on improving key sub-transmission lines. The goal is to ensure a more dependable electricity supply for thousands of homes and businesses.

This undertaking involves replacing older, weaker electricity cables on lines connecting the KNUST Primary Substation to Kaase, and Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply Point. ECG will install stronger, larger conductors. These upgrades aim to carry more electricity and reduce interruptions. They will also fix issues with voltage consistency, a common problem for consumers.

The Greater Kumasi area in the Ashanti Region relies heavily on stable power for its economy. This upgrade is part of a larger effort to modernize Ghana's energy infrastructure. President Akufo-Addo's government has prioritized energy sector improvements since 2017. Reliable power is crucial for industries and livelihoods across Ghana. This project will reinforce connections between the Kumasi 1 and Kumasi 2 Bulk Supply Points. It aims to build a more resilient power grid.

Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, ECG's General Manager for External Communications, stated the project's importance. He explained the upgrade involves replacing 265 sqmm conductors with 400 sqmm ones. This will improve power transfer and strengthen supply reliability. "The company apologised for the disruptions experienced by customers and residents during the execution of the project," he added. He assured that temporary inconveniences are necessary for a more reliable power future.

The improvements are expected to directly benefit communities such as Kaase, Kuntenase, Sewua, and Bekwai. ECG hopes these changes will lead to fewer power outages. Residents and businesses can anticipate better voltage levels. The ECG will closely monitor network performance post-completion. This upgrade is a critical step towards a more robust and modern energy distribution system for the Ashanti Region.
