The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has begun a GHS 34 million project to replace transformers at the Batsonaa Primary Substation in Accra. This project involves installing two higher-capacity 39MVA transformers, replacing older 26MVA units. The goal is to improve electricity supply and increase the power network's capacity.
This upgrade is a significant part of a nationwide infrastructure improvement plan. It aims to boost power supply reliability and ensure a stable electricity system. The Batsonaa area serves many homes and industries, making increased capacity crucial for meeting growing demand. This step will help address frequent power outages and low voltage problems experienced by local customers.
This initiative fits into Ghana’s broader effort to strengthen its power distribution network. The government’s Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme supports this project. ECG has already completed similar upgrades in other key areas, including Adenta, Nungua, Teshie, Kumasi, and Akwatia. These national upgrades are vital for supporting Ghana's economic growth and industrialization.
Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager for External Communications at ECG, confirmed the effort. He stated the exercise forms part of strengthening the country's power distribution network. "We hope that after these replacements, we will have a very strong network, reliable power supply and a stable system," Dr Ayiku said. He also urged the public to be careful around electrical installations during the rainy season.
Francis Kofi Atsyatsyaha, General Manager for Sub-Transmission at ECG, highlighted the project's economic importance. He noted that industrial consumers represent about 70 percent of customers served by the Batsonaa Primary Substation. This makes the upgrade essential for keeping economic activities vibrant in the area. One transformer was installed recently, with the second planned for installation by the end of June 2026. This work was scheduled for a Sunday to reduce disruption for businesses in the industrial enclave.
The Batsonaa installation marks the 12th transformer replacement under this ongoing programme. Old transformers are being relocated to other areas needing more capacity, such as Akwatia, Saltpond, and Tema. ECG plans to upgrade 22 substations in the Greater Accra Region alone. More transformers are expected to arrive by the end of June 2026 to support future stages of the programme. This nationwide upgrade will continue beyond that period, boosting power stability and industrial development across Ghana.
