Ghana's petroleum production will rebound in 2024, ending five consecutive years of decline in the sector. Energy Minister John Jinapor announced this recovery, attributing it to new investment agreements.

These investments total GHS 17.5 billion (equivalent to $3.5 billion). This includes a GHS 7.5 billion ($1.5 billion) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Italian energy company Eni. Another GHS 10 billion ($2 billion) agreement has been signed with Jubilee Partners. These deals are expected to boost crude oil output significantly.

This renewed focus on the petroleum sector comes as Ghana seeks to stabilize its economy. The country has faced challenges including rising inflation and a depreciating cedi. Increased oil production can provide crucial foreign exchange revenue and strengthen national finances. Ghana’s petroleum sector plays a vital role in its economic growth and government revenue, despite efforts towards diversification.

Minister Jinapor confirmed these developments during President John Mahama's 'Resetting Ghana' engagement in the Savannah Region on Saturday, May 23. He stated, “For five consecutive years, petroleum production has been declining. This year, let me assure you, petroleum production is not going to decline. It’s going to pick up and rise again.” The Minister stressed the government’s commitment to making the energy sector more resilient and attractive to investors.

The anticipated turnaround in petroleum production could significantly impact Ghana’s economic outlook. A recovery in oil and gas output would likely improve the balance of payments and government fiscal position. Decision-makers and financial markets will closely monitor the realized production figures throughout 2024. Success in this sector could also attract more foreign direct investment into Ghana's energy landscape.

The government's strategy involves strengthening the existing energy framework and actively seeking new partnerships. This aims to secure long-term sustainability and growth in the oil and gas industry. These efforts are crucial for Ghana to maximize its natural resources for national development.
