Government Accelerates Renewable Energy Push with Nationwide Solar and Mini-Grid Expansion
Ghana is set to significantly expand its renewable energy projects nationwide. This initiative targets solar power systems and mini-grids. The goal is to increase electricity access for more citizens. It also aims to lessen the country's reliance on fossil fuels.
This expansion is a key part of Ghana's strategy. It aims to build a low-carbon and sustainable economy. The government will focus on rooftop solar installations. It will also promote other off-grid renewable solutions. These efforts will reach communities that have had limited electricity access.
Dr. Robert Sogbadji, Deputy Director for Renewable Energy and Green Transition at the Ministry of Energy, shared this news. He spoke at a workshop in Accra on Thursday, May 28, 2026. The event focused on green investment and capacity building. Dr. Sogbadji stated that Ghana must move beyond small pilot projects. It needs to implement larger-scale renewable energy solutions.
Ghana has already seen success with programs like SREP. This program has helped install solar mini-grids. These have brought clean electricity to island and lakeside communities. Thousands of people now have power for homes and businesses. Schools and health centres also benefit from this clean energy.
The government is also preparing a national net-metering framework. This will allow people with solar panels to sell extra electricity to the national grid. This move could lower electricity bills for many households. It will also encourage more private investment in solar technology. This reflects Ghana's commitment to inclusive energy access.
Ghana's electricity access rate is now over 89 percent. This puts the country ahead of many in sub-Saharan Africa. The expanded renewable energy agenda is supported by strong policies. These include the Renewable Energy Act and the National Energy Transition Framework. A revised Renewable Energy Master Plan will guide future development.
Mr. Samuel Arkurst from the Ministry of Finance highlighted other benefits. He stated that the transition to renewable energy is an economic necessity. Climate disasters like flooding and erosion cost Ghana a lot. Investing in green growth can help reduce these economic pressures. It also helps Ghana meet its climate goals under the Paris Agreement.
The government believes initiatives like the "Green Energy Zones" will attract investment. These zones are expected to boost local economies. They will also create new jobs for communities across the country. Strong partnerships and innovative financing are crucial for this green investment drive.
