Ghana's Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has called for greater investment in reliable and integrated energy systems across Africa. This investment aims to support the continent's economic transformation and foster industrial growth. Mr. Jinapor made these remarks at the 3rd Africa Energy Technology Conference held recently in Accra.
Africa’s future development depends largely on its ability to provide affordable and sustainable energy. This energy will power essential industries, foster innovation, and create new economic opportunities. Mr. Jinapor stressed that Africa must stop exporting raw materials without value addition. Instead, the continent should focus on creating value through industrialization, technology, and strategic energy investments.
This call comes as Ghana and other African nations seek to boost their economies through diversification and industrialization. Strong and reliable energy infrastructure is a critical enabler for manufacturing, processing, and technological advancement. These sectors are vital for reducing reliance on raw material exports and generating higher-value goods and services. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) further amplifies the need for robust energy networks to facilitate intra-African trade and industrial growth.
Mr. Jinapor said Africa possesses enormous potential due to its abundant natural resources, growing population, and expanding market opportunities. Addressing participants, he highlighted that achieving this vision requires bold leadership, regional collaboration, and sustained investment in energy infrastructure. His comments align with broader continental efforts to secure energy sovereignty and development.
Ghana is actively working to strengthen its energy security and promote a cleaner, more resilient energy mix. These efforts include expanding renewable energy projects and deploying battery storage systems. The country is also implementing mini-grid electrification and modernising its gas-to-power facilities. Ghana is also preparing for the future development of nuclear energy. These initiatives demonstrate a national commitment to the energy transition and industrialization goals Mr. Jinapor articulated.
The emphasis on energy investment signals potential opportunities for local and international financiers. It also indicates a continued policy focus on developing energy infrastructure projects. Decision-makers and markets will closely watch progress in regional energy integration and investment inflows into the energy sector. These developments are crucial for unlocking Africa's industrial potential and ensuring sustainable economic growth across the continent.
