    Kumasi Anwomaso Power Upgrade Doubles Capacity to 978 MVA

    Ghana's Energy Minister, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has inspected the Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade, a project set to more than double electricity transmission capacity in the Ashanti Region. This critical investment will replace an existing 19-kilometre single-circuit 364 MVA transmission line with a modern double-circuit line capable of carrying 978 MVA. The upgrade aims to significantly strengthen electricity supply in Kumasi and across the Ashanti Region.

    The project forms part of the government's commitment to modernising Ghana's electricity transmission infrastructure. This modernisation addresses rising demand and improves the reliability of power supply. The increased capacity from 364 MVA to 978 MVA represents a substantial enhancement, providing a more robust and stable power network for the region. This development is crucial for supporting the area's economic and industrial expansion.

    This infrastructure upgrade aligns with Ghana's broader economic strategy to enhance energy security and support industrialisation. Reliable power supply is a cornerstone for attracting investment and fostering business growth. Previous challenges with power reliability, often referred to as 'dumsor,' have highlighted the urgent need for such upgrades. This project directly addresses those historical issues by building a more resilient grid.

    Dr. Jinapor stated, "The project will replace an ageing 19-kilometre single-circuit 364 MVA transmission line with a modern, higher-capacity double-circuit 2x488 MVA (978 MVA), more than doubling the current capacity." He also disclosed that the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) will upgrade a transformer at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation from 66 MVA to 145 MVA. This transformer upgrade will further enhance the stability and resilience of electricity supply within Kumasi and surrounding communities.

    The project has now entered its final phase of construction, with major works scheduled to commence from Monday, July 20, 2026. These essential engineering works could result in temporary and localised power interruptions for some electricity consumers. Dr. Jinapor appealed to residents, businesses, and institutions to cooperate with the implementing agencies during this period. He assured the public that the temporary inconvenience is necessary to deliver a stronger and more dependable electricity network.

    This upgrade is expected to improve power system resilience and reduce network constraints. It will provide sufficient transmission capacity to meet the growing electricity needs of Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region. Decision-makers and businesses will closely watch the project's completion and its impact on power stability. A successful implementation could pave the way for further infrastructure investments across Ghana, boosting investor confidence in the energy sector.

    The Minister emphasised that GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would work diligently to minimise disruptions. They will restore power promptly whenever outages occur. This commitment aims to mitigate the impact on daily life and economic activities. The long-term benefits of a reliable power supply are expected to far outweigh the short-term inconveniences.
