Okogyeman Okese Essandoh IX, Omanhen of the Nkusukum Traditional Area, has urged the government to restart redevelopment at the Saltpond Oil Field. The traditional leader stated that completing this project would restore hope for residents of the Mfantseman Municipality.
He believes the redevelopment would create jobs for young people. It would also support local businesses and stimulate economic activity in the Central Region. The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) is the key state agency for oil exploration and production.
The Saltpond Oil Field holds historical significance in Ghana's energy sector. It was Ghana's first commercial oil field, beginning production in 1978. While its output has declined significantly over the years, calls for redeveloping older fields reflect a broader strategy to maximize domestic energy resources. This aligns with Ghana's goal of achieving greater energy independence and leveraging its natural wealth for economic development.
Okogyeman Essandoh made these remarks during the launch of the 2026 Odambea Festival at Yamoransa. He appealed to citizens of Mfantseman to contribute to the festival’s success. He also encouraged the government to continue prioritizing road development within the Mfantseman Municipality. Improved roads could lead to better connectivity and economic growth in the Central Region.
The Omanhen also expressed gratitude for the approval of the Ewoyaa Lithium Mining Project. This project is the first lithium mining initiative in the Nkusukum area. Lithium is a critical mineral for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy technologies worldwide. Its development can attract significant foreign investment and create new economic avenues.
Okogyeman Essandoh highlighted the project’s major potential for employment and economic growth. He also mentioned skills development, infrastructure expansion, and national industrial progress. He called for responsible mining practices to protect the environment and safeguard community interests. Fair benefits for Nkusukum and Ghana are crucial.
The revival of the Saltpond Oil Field could signal a renewed focus on domestic hydrocarbon production. This would bolster the energy sector. It would also generate local employment. Stakeholders will closely monitor government response and GNPC’s engagement. The potential economic impact of both oil and lithium projects in the Central Region is substantial. This makes them key areas for future investment and policy.
