An Accra-Tema passenger train derailed on Thursday morning near Avenor. The derailment happened after the train collided with two stray cattle on the railway tracks. Hundreds of commuters were left stranded. The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. shortly after the train left Avenor Station. What was a normal commute turned chaotic. The train struck the animals. Portions of the coaches derailed. This brought the journey to a sudden stop. Passengers, including workers and traders, had to find other transport. This caused significant delays on already busy roads. Luckily, no injuries were reported. However, passengers were visibly shaken by the event. The two cattle died instantly upon impact.

Eyewitnesses reported the animals appeared suddenly. This gave the train operator very little time to react. The train operator managed to slow down significantly. This action may have prevented a larger disaster. Alidu Shaibu, an eyewitness, stated he had never seen such an event. He praised the driver's quick thinking. Railway officials confirmed the train did not suffer severe structural damage. However, the line was temporarily unusable.

Daniel Asiedu, Area Civil Engineer for the Ghana Railway Company Limited, called the derailment unfortunate. He pointed to increasing human and animal activity on railway land. This is a serious concern for public safety. "Our train was running from Tema to Accra early this morning around 7:40 a.m. when we received a report that the train had hit a huge cow, causing the derailment," Mr. Asiedu said. He warned that such incursions pose a major risk. Ghana's rail infrastructure is vital for transport. Continued encroachment threatens this. Mr. Asiedu suggested more security is needed. This would help clear unauthorized activities near the tracks. These activities damage infrastructure. They also put lives in danger.

Technical officers and engineers were quickly on site. They began emergency repair work. Officials expressed confidence in resuming services. "We are going to fix everything today. By this evening, the train should be able to run from here to Tema and back again," Mr. Asiedu assured. By Thursday afternoon, no one had claimed ownership of the cattle. Investigations into the incident are ongoing. For many passengers, the disruption was more than an inconvenience. It was a stark reminder of safety issues.

The incident highlights growing dangers along Ghana's rail lines. Unchecked activity poses a significant risk. This affects thousands of daily commuters. The economic impact includes lost productivity for stranded passengers. It also includes the cost of repairs to railway infrastructure. The Ghana Railway Company Limited faces ongoing challenges. These challenges involve managing safety and operations effectively. The frequency of such incidents could deter rail travel. This would push more people to congested road networks.
