A fire severely damaged the engine of a cargo truck near a fuel station in Konongo Ahyiam, Ashanti Region, on May 18. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the incident involving a Benz Atego truck. This truck was transporting fresh plantains and pears from Kumasi to Accra. The driver, Mr John Nketia, had stopped the vehicle directly in front of a Total Fuel Station. This created a dangerous situation because of the fuel stored nearby. Thick smoke and flames were seen coming from the truck's engine area. This caused panic among people at the busy commercial location. Some individuals moved away from the scene fearing an explosion. Firefighters from the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Command arrived quickly. They worked to contain the fire before it could spread. The fire badly affected the truck's engine compartment. It sustained partial burn damage. However, the firefighters stopped the flames from reaching the cargo area. The truck's load of fresh plantain and pears was saved. This prevented significant financial losses for the owners. Sub-Officer Baah Solomon led the firefighting team. They used multiple extinguishers to put out the fire. These included dry chemical powder and carbon dioxide types. A total of nine extinguishers were used. No one was reported injured or killed in the fire. The incident highlights the risks of vehicular fires near fuel stations. It also shows the importance of rapid emergency response. The GNFS reported the incident on Facebook on May 22. This event occurred in the same region as previous mining accidents in Konongo.
