Akamugri Donatus Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister, has launched the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Market at Nania in the Kassena-Nankana West District. This essential project is scheduled for completion within 18 months. Sunlu Ghana Limited will execute the construction, with Avangarde Design Services acting as the consultant.
This market is a key part of the government’s 24-Hour Economy Initiative. That initiative aims to stimulate economic growth, promote trade, and create employment opportunities. The market will feature 21 distinct facilities. These include lockable shops, sheds, food courts, and cold stores. It will also have warehouses, washrooms, restaurants, a pharmacy, and a clinic. Additional facilities cover a daycare centre, gymnasium, and police and fire service posts. A meat section, Women Development Bank, waste management area, and parking spaces are also part of the plan.
The initiative by President John Dramani Mahama seeks to address youth unemployment and underemployment across Ghana. This 24-hour market specifically targets boosting local economic activities. It creates both public and private sector job opportunities. Secure business environments are crucial for traders and mobile money operators, who often face security risks. The area's proximity to Sahelian countries offers significant market opportunities for local traders.
Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga stated the project demonstrates the government's commitment to the local community. "This 24-hour market is a way of appreciation and a way of saying thank you," he said. He further explained that the market will provide a secure environment for businesses to operate continuously. Women traders and mobile money operators can work without fear due to guaranteed security measures. Police and fire service posts will ensure safety for all users.
The completion of the 24-Hour Economy Market promises several economic benefits for Kassena-Nankana West. It will significantly improve internally generated revenue for the District Assembly. The project aims to empower traders and provide a modern trading environment. Businesses will operate around the clock, boosting commerce and creating new jobs. The government instructed the contractor to involve local community members in employment during construction. This ensures direct community benefit and fosters local involvement.
Mr. Stephen Aeke Akurugu, the Kassena-Nankana West District Chief Executive, called the project a major milestone for district development. He highlighted its potential to create employment opportunities for young people. Mr. Nikyema Billa Alamzy, Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga Constituency, noted the market's strategic location. It shares borders with Sahelian countries, opening up broader trade avenues. This market is one of four such projects the Minister has launched across the Upper East Region. Other locations include Bolgatanga and Kassena-Nankana Municipalities, and Bawku West District. Stakeholders expect the contractor to maintain high quality standards and complete the project on schedule.
