The Ministry of Transport has begun creating a plan to deploy 100 new buses. This initiative aims to solve ongoing problems with public transportation. Transportation officials expect this to ease commuting difficulties for many Ghanaians.

The first group of these 29-seater buses arrived on April 5, 2026. This delivery is the first part of a larger purchase. The government is acquiring a total of 300 buses. A second shipment of 100 buses is expected in August. Another 100 buses will arrive in November.

These new buses will serve busy routes within the capital city. Key areas include Accra to Madina and Adenta. They will also run on routes such as Accra–Awoshie–Amasaman. The Accra–Mallam–Kasoa and Accra–Tema routes will also receive the buses. Ghana's public transport system suffers from overcrowding. There is often a lack of sufficient buses. Traffic congestion also significantly impacts travel times. Commuter demand, especially in Accra and Tema, is very high.

Governments have tried to fix these problems before. Previous efforts sought to improve mass transit services. They aimed to reduce the burden on everyday travelers. The new bus deployment is expected to strengthen public transport options. It should improve how people move around the cities. This will offer relief to commuters on the busiest roads. The gradual arrival and distribution of buses will support efforts to make urban transport more efficient nationwide.

The Treasury will fund the procurement with money raised from taxes. The cost per bus is estimated to be around GHS 250,000, making the total procurement GHS 75 million for 300 buses. This infrastructure investment is crucial for economic activity. Improved mobility can lead to increased productivity. It also supports job creation within the transport sector.

The successful implementation of this initiative depends on effective route planning and maintenance. The Ministry must also consider fare structures. These will influence affordability for passengers. The public will watch closely to see if these buses truly improve daily commutes. The government aims to enhance the overall quality of public transit across Ghana.
