Ghana has successfully trained 500 social workers. This marks the fifth cohort to complete the Social Services Workforce Training Programme. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) organised the graduation. The ceremony celebrated the participants' completion of intensive training.
The programme equips graduates with vital skills. They gain knowledge and ethical grounding for effective social protection delivery. Dr. Marian W. A. Kpakpah, Chief Director at MoGCSP, spoke at the event. She urged graduates to translate their learning into community impact. Social work prioritises human dignity and inclusive growth. It focuses on people and their well-being, not just infrastructure. The goal is to prevent individuals and families from falling through service gaps.
This initiative is a key part of Ghana's broader social development agenda. It aligns with efforts to strengthen public service delivery. Ghana has faced challenges in ensuring comprehensive social safety nets. Previous reports show that access to services varies significantly across regions. Investment in human capital for social services is critical. This training aims to address a shortage of skilled social workers. It supports the government's commitment to uplifting vulnerable citizens.
Representing UNICEF, Child Protection Specialist Young Joo Lee attended the ceremony. She highlighted social work's demanding but essential role in national growth. UNICEF supports ongoing capacity building in this sector. Madam Yvonne Norman, Principal of the School of Social Work, also addressed the graduates. She stressed that social workers must be proactive problem-solvers. They should drive positive change in their communities.
The strengthened social protection system will have significant implications. Increased national well-being and reduced poverty are expected outcomes. Graduates will work directly with families and individuals. They will identify needs and connect citizens to available resources. This professionalisation of social work aims to build more resilient communities. It will contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Ghana.
