Teachers threaten strike over 20% allowance
The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has given the government a two-week ultimatum. They demand the immediate implementation of a 20% deprived-area allowance for teachers. Failure to meet this deadline by the end of August will result in widespread industrial action across the education sector. This ultimatum follows a previous threat of industrial action at the end of July. PRETAG postponed that action after receiving interventions from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. The association's National President, King Ali Awudu, stated this during a media interaction in Koforidua on Monday, August 10. This ongoing dispute highlights persistent challenges in public sector wage negotiations and conditions of service. Teacher unions frequently engage in negotiations with the government over allowances and salary adjustments. Such actions often disrupt the academic calendar and affect millions of students nationwide. The government faces increasing pressure to manage its wage bill while addressing legitimate demands from various public sector unions. King Ali Awudu, PRETAG's National President, urged the government to resolve these issues promptly. He emphasized that the extension to the end of August was a final opportunity for the government to act. Mr. Awudu also called on President Mahama to ensure the promotion of qualified teachers, a promise he attributed to the 2024 campaign. If the government does not address PRETAG's demands, the education sector could face significant disruptions. A teacher strike would impact learning outcomes and potentially delay the academic year. Decision-makers will closely watch the government's response to avoid further industrial unrest and maintain stability in public education. The financial implications of implementing the 20% allowance will also be a key consideration for the Ministry of Finance.
