Tema Port Director Zumah Tebon has initiated a health walk aimed at improving the well-being of maritime workers. This move responds to a national increase in deaths from non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The event took place on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

The health walk brought together staff, management, and stakeholders from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. It encouraged healthy lifestyles and workplace safety. Participants traversed specific routes within the busy harbour area. This initiative addresses growing health concerns within Ghana.

Ghana faces a significant challenge with NCDs. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Health experts report that NCDs cause 42% to 45% of all deaths in the country. Unhealthy eating, lack of exercise, and stress are major risk factors. These lifestyle diseases are overtaking infections as leading causes of death.

Director Tebon stressed the link between good health and workplace productivity. He stated the walk promotes healthier routines and strengthens collaboration. "The port environment is naturally demanding and stressful," he noted. Regular exercise is crucial for sustained productivity in this setting.

The health walk also focused on occupational health and safety awareness. Participants were urged to adopt regular exercise as part of their daily lives. This contributes to their personal health and the port's growth. Many attendees found the exercise timely and beneficial for team spirit.

Management hopes this health walk will become a regular event. It is part of a broader plan for staff wellness and stakeholder engagement. The Tema Port contributes significantly to Ghana's trade sector. Ensuring worker health is vital for its continued success and the broader economy.
