Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a key figure in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, has delivered a stark assessment of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). He stated that he does not wish the NDC well and has described the party as a "menace" to Ghana. This strong declaration comes amid growing discussions about internal disagreements and political ambitions within the NDC. He made these remarks on Joy FM's Top Story program on Monday, May 25.

Mr. Aboagye contends that the NDC is heading towards its most significant internal contest ever. He attributes this to the party adjusting to governance after the era of strong leadership from figures like former President John Dramani Mahama. According to him, the party is experiencing a political transition that is normal in multi-party democracies. However, he believes it is being exacerbated by the absence of a clear, dominant leader who will not be seeking re-election.

Historically, the NDC has been united under strong leaders. These include former President Jerry John Rawlings, the late President John Evans Atta Mills, and most recently, President Mahama. Mr. Aboagye pointed out that these leaders helped to manage internal tensions effectively. He cited the past breakaway led by Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings as an example, explaining that the party remained stable because of clear leadership at the time. This stability contrasts with the current situation, where President Mahama is expected to be serving his final term.

"In the next few months, nobody in the NDC would really care much about what President Mahama says because, as it happens in every democracy, a president who is exiting and will not contest again becomes a lame duck," Mr. Aboagye explained. He believes that the NDC leadership must acknowledge this evolving reality. Allowing internal competition to develop naturally is crucial, he argued. If not, the party risks an unprecedented level of internal strife.

"We are already seeing party members exchange shots, and the real contest has not even started yet," Mr. Aboagye observed. His remarks highlight the significant political dynamics at play within one of Ghana's major political parties. Such internal tensions, if unmanaged, could impact the party's ability to function effectively and present a united front in future elections. The commentary also underscores the strategic positioning of the Bawumia campaign, aiming to capitalize on perceived weaknesses within the opposition.
