Russia Ukraine Accuse Each Other of Ceasefire Violations

    1 min read2 min listen

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of breaking ceasefires declared for Victory Day. Moscow reported over 1,000 violations. Ukraine stated Russia continued strikes on its positions. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a ceasefire for May 8-9. Ukraine had earlier called for an indefinite truce starting May 6.

The Russian defense ministry claimed 1,365 ceasefire violations. These included 153 artillery strikes and 887 drone attacks. The ministry stated Ukraine targeted civilian areas in Kursk and Belgorod regions. It added Russian forces provided a "mirror response". Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said about 20 drones were shot down near the city. Russian armed forces also reported Ukrainian strikes in Perm, Yaroslavl, Rostov, and Grozny. Thirteen airports in southern Russia suspended operations after drone attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated over 140 attacks on Ukrainian positions occurred. He also reported more than 850 drone strikes. Zelensky argued this showed no real attempt by Russia to cease fire. He stated Ukraine would respond in kind. Ukraine had previously accused Russia of violating its unilateral ceasefire. This included drone attacks on a kindergarten in Sumy region. Two people died in that incident.

The accusations come as European Council President António Costa sees potential for EU negotiations with Russia. Costa mentioned Zelensky's backing for such talks. He spoke with European Union leaders about engaging Russia. Costa highlighted the need for dialogue on Europe's security future. The US has previously mediated talks without success. Washington is reportedly focused on the Middle East.

These events add to the ongoing economic strain caused by the conflict. Sanctions against Russia continue to impact global energy and food markets. Ukraine's infrastructure faces continuous damage. Rebuilding efforts will require significant financial investment. The prolonged conflict affects trade routes and investor confidence across the continent. Decisions made by leaders in Moscow and Kyiv will influence economic recovery and stability for years.
