Ghana’s main stock market index, the GSE Composite Index, achieved a 72.52% year-to-date gain by the end of April 2026. This strong performance signals a significant recovery and improved investor confidence in Ghana’s equity market.

Market capitalisation surged to GHS 285.76 billion in April 2026, significantly higher than GHS 135.97 billion recorded in the same period last year. The GSE Financial Stocks Index also advanced strongly, posting a 90.21% gain year-to-date. This broad improvement reflects increased investor activity, particularly across financial sector companies.

This market rally aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s economy. The increased market capitalisation and strong index performance suggest renewed local and international investor interest. This improved confidence is crucial for long-term economic stability and growth. The overall year-on-year increase in trading volume and value points to a more liquid and attractive market compared to the previous year.

According to the GSE’s April 2026 Monthly Summary, the total number of transactions reached 154,467. This represents a substantial 999.17% increase over the previous year, highlighting much higher trading engagement. The market saw a cumulative volume of 623.52 million shares traded year-to-date, valued at GHS 3.16 billion. This shows volume growth of 640.37% and value growth of 411.45% compared to the same period last year.

Looking ahead, the sustained market momentum could attract further investment and listings. The upcoming initial public offering (IPO) by Kasapreko PLC, aiming to raise up to GHS 700 million, is a significant event to watch. This IPO and other corporate engagements demonstrate ongoing interest in capital market participation. Continued strong performance may encourage more Ghanaian companies to raise capital through the stock exchange, boosting economic development.

However, trading activity in April alone showed a slowdown compared to March. Monthly volume stood at 60.94 million shares, valued at GHS 373.41 million. This represented declines of 68.56% in volume and 65.84% in value month-on-month. This suggests that while overall year-to-date performance is robust, market liquidity can still be uneven. Investors should monitor whether this month-on-month dip is a temporary fluctuation or an indicator of varying liquidity.

Several companies recorded significant gains in April. SIC Insurance Company PLC led the pack, rising by 71.21%. Clydestone Ghana PLC gained 61.62%, and GCB Bank PLC advanced by 53.55%. These strong performances by key players contributed significantly to the Composite Index’s upward movement. Other notable gainers included Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, CalBank PLC, and Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana).

Conversely, Access Bank Ghana PLC recorded the steepest monthly decline, falling by 34.36%. Benso Palm Plantation PLC lost 14.50%, and Fan Milk PLC declined by 11.40%. These contrasting performances highlight the varied health and investor perceptions of different sectors and companies within the Ghanaian market. Market participants need to perform thorough due diligence.

The fixed income market also saw increased activity. The Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM) closed April with a total volume traded of 35.05 billion. This is a 93.45% increase compared to the same period last year. In value terms, GFIM recorded GHS 32.59 billion in April 2026, up 107.84% from April 2025. Treasury bills continue to dominate this market, accounting for 55.21% of the total volume. Government Notes and Bonds made up 43.80%, underscoring the strong role of government paper.
