Ghana Stock Exchange's (GSE) Composite Index, which tracks the performance of all listed companies, fell by 1.12% on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The index closed at 14,379.41 points, reducing its year-to-date return to 63.96%. Market capitalization, the total value of all shares, decreased to GHS 263.45 billion from GHS 264.74 billion.
This decline primarily stemmed from a drop in key stocks, notably MTN Ghana. MTN Ghana's share price fell by GHS 0.22 to GHS 6.51, making it one of the day's biggest losers. Other companies such as SIC Insurance, CalBank, and Fan Milk also experienced declines, pulling the broader market lower.
The Ghanaian equities market has shown strong year-to-date returns, but its performance remains heavily dependent on a few large companies. The concentration of trading activity in MTN Ghana, which accounted for GHS 57.56 million of the day's GHS 59.47 million total value, highlights this dependence. Price movements in such dominant stocks significantly influence the overall market direction, creating volatility for investors.
Norvan Reports noted that the day's activity was “overwhelmingly dominated by MTN Ghana”. Its substantial trading volume, with 8.84 million shares exchanged, reinforced its position as the market's primary liquidity driver. Despite this heavy trading, a decline in MTN Ghana's share price pressured the Composite Index.
Looking ahead, market participants will closely watch whether investors engage in bargain hunting for MTN Ghana shares or if profit-taking continues. Dividend payments from GCB Bank, Republic Bank Ghana, and MTN Ghana in June, and from Fan Milk and Ghana Oil Company later in the year, may influence trading activity. The market's resilience will depend on whether gains in other sectors can offset further pressure from large-cap stocks.
Despite the Composite Index's fall, the GSE Financial Stocks Index experienced a slight increase of 0.31%, closing at 7,873.87 points. This lifted its year-to-date return to 69.43%. Companies like NewGold ETF, Zen Petroleum, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana, and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) also saw gains. These gains, however, were not enough to counteract the significant drag from MTN Ghana and other decliners. Total volume traded increased substantially to 9.25 million shares from 1.02 million shares in the previous session.
