Council of State Pledges Support for Late Nana Akuoko Sarpong's Funeral Rites

    National body eulogises Agogo Omanhene, promises representation at ceremonies.

    The Council of State has eulogised the late Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong. He was the Omanhene of the Agogo Traditional Area. The Council described him as a "pillar" in Ghana’s leadership. His death is a significant loss to the nation. The Council also promised its support for his funeral rites. They will be represented at the ceremonies.

    A delegation from the Agogo Traditional Council visited the Council of State. They formally announced Nana Akuoko Sarpong's passing. They invited the Council to the one-week observance. This event is scheduled for June 4, 2026. It will take place at the Agogo Palace. Nana Akuoko Sarpong died last month. He ruled Agogo for 51 years.

    Mr Edward Korbly Doe Adjaho chairs the Council of State. He stated that Nana's death is a loss to Agogo. It is also a personal loss for many. Mr Adjaho knew Nana Akuoko Sarpong for a long time. Their association began at Accra Academy. It continued through Parliament and the Council of State. Nana Akuoko Sarpong was dedicated to national development. He also supported his alma mater. He even attended school events in a wheelchair.

    Mr Adjaho called Nana Akuoko Sarpong a "man of many parts." He played a stabilising role in difficult times. This was especially true after the 1981 coup. Figures like Nana Akuoko Sarpong helped stabilize Ghana. He served in several key national roles. These included Secretary for Health and Interior. He was also a Member of Parliament. Later, he served on the Council of State.

    Nana Bediako Brogya Sarpong spoke for the delegation. He is the Dompiahene of Agogo. He also chairs the Funeral Planning Committee. Mr Sarpong said they informed the Council formally. This was because Nana Akuoko Sarpong served the nation well. He was a "true statesman." Nana was a lawyer, politician, and chief. His work impacted many lives.

    Born on August 11, 1938, Nana Akuoko Sarpong became Omanhene in December 1975. He was 38 years old then. He studied at Accra Academy and Opoku Ware School. He also attended the University of Ghana. He completed studies at GIMPA as well. He represented Asante Akyem North in Parliament. During the PNDC era, he held ministerial roles. These were in Health, Interior, and Chieftaincy. He was a member of the Council of State during the Fourth Republic.
