A 56-year-old security guard faces new charges of robbery and sextortion. He is accused of sexually assaulting two female students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Police prosecutors amended the charge sheet before the Asokore Mampong District Court on Friday, May 8, 2026.
Chief Inspector Samuel Agyare informed the court that robbery is now included alongside rape and sextortion charges. These new accusations relate to the second complainant, a 23-year-old KNUST student. The accused, Lloyd Kwaku Boateng, works at Ayeduase Roman Catholic Junior High School. He was initially charged with rape for an alleged assault on a 22-year-old student.
This case highlights growing concerns about safety around Ghanaian universities. The GHS 400 million injected into the KNUST Teaching Hospital project by GETFund shows significant investment in the university's infrastructure. However, security incidents like these raise questions about campus safety management. Reports of alleged student rape and extortion previously prompted a response from KNUST, stating such events did not occur on campus. This suggests a complex situation requiring thorough investigation.
Prosecutors stated that the first incident happened on February 13, 2026. Boateng allegedly confronted a 22-year-old student and her boyfriend. He accused them of improper conduct. Police say he assaulted the boyfriend. He took their mobile phones and room keys. He then demanded GHS 300. He forced the boyfriend to leave the school compound. Prosecutors claim Boateng then took the female student to a classroom. He overpowered her and raped her, despite her resistance.
Nearly two months later, on April 4, 2026, a second complaint was filed. A 23-year-old student reported a similar incident at KNUST Police. Her boyfriend was with her on the school compound at night. Boateng allegedly approached them, claiming to enforce school rules. He intimidated the couple. He separated the complainant from her boyfriend. He allegedly held her hostage until the early hours of April 5. Chief Inspector Agyare reported that Boateng threatened her with a knife. He then forcibly had sexual intercourse with her. Prosecutors also allege Boateng forced the second complainant to transfer GHS 150. This money went from her mobile money wallet to his account. This led to the robbery and sextortion charges.
The prosecution confirmed that investigations are complete. A duplicate docket has been sent to the Attorney General’s Office for advice. The court adjourned the case to May 22, 2026. Boateng remains in prison custody. The case has spurred public worry about student safety. This includes incidents of authority abuse and sexual violence against women near tertiary institutions.
