Mahama urges Ghanaians to embrace national optimism

Former President John Dramani Mahama calls for an end to negative discourse, stressing faith in Ghana's future development.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to stop speaking negatively about the country. He stated that constant pessimism and a lack of belief in the nation's potential undermine efforts to build a prosperous and united Ghana. This call comes amidst ongoing discussions about Ghana's economic future and social cohesion. Mahama made these remarks during a service at the Ringway Gospel Centre of the Assemblies of God Church on Sunday, August 2. He highlighted that Ghana's development depends not only on government policies but also on the attitudes, values, and commitment of its citizens. The former President expressed concern about a growing culture of hopelessness among some Ghanaians, which he believes hinders progress. This sentiment aligns with broader national efforts to foster patriotism and collective responsibility for economic growth. Ghana has faced various economic challenges, including inflation and currency depreciation, which often fuel public discontent. Leaders frequently appeal for national unity and a positive outlook to navigate these difficulties and encourage investment. President Mahama specifically stated, “Our forebears rose because they believed their nation would become great. In many of our societies, people give up and say Ghana will never change. We can never become great.” He also criticised suggestions that Ghana would have been better off under colonial rule. He described such views as a rejection of the sacrifices made by the country's founding leaders, including Kwame Nkrumah. The implications of such calls are significant for national morale and economic confidence. A positive national outlook can encourage local investment, attract foreign direct investment, and foster a more productive workforce. Conversely, widespread pessimism can deter economic activity and exacerbate existing challenges, affecting market stability and public finance. Mahama further called on Ghanaians to embrace values that promote national development. He stressed that building a better Ghana requires honesty, hard work, integrity, and a commitment to the common good. These values are crucial for combating corruption and ensuring equitable distribution of national resources, which are vital for sustainable economic growth. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of these ethical principles for national progress. “We must work hard. We must tell the truth. We must be honest. We must reject corruption. We must look after the most vulnerable in our society. And we must have faith in serving the common good,” he affirmed. This message resonates with ongoing government and civil society initiatives aimed at improving governance and public accountability.
